Factory Ship

by Aidan Andrew Dun

Greenpeace activists protest at stern of whaling factory ship. Southern Ocean. Greenpeace first anti whaling action.

for Heathcote Williams

Rusted sides
stained another red
cruel gates wide-open
showing machinery

Swivel-mounted cannon
winches for crucifying
the ocean god
over The Solent

On a sunny day
crossing to the island
she came slinking
from the open sea

Unmistakable
aura of pure evil
making flesh
heart itself recoil.

As a curse
came to the lips
someone whispered:
‘No judgment!’

Sun flashed
in a blue mirror;
world span
on an arc of justice.

And looking back
the factory-ship
went eastward sinking
on a dark line.
